Mco Group Ltd were contacted directly by St Cuthberts Church in Earls Court following recommendation from a Heritage Architect.
On arrival the existing timber Calvary was in a poor condition with a possibility of collapse into the pathway. After a meeting with the structural engineers and church we agreed that it was safer to immediately support the crucifix and provide a lifting scaffold arrangement for later works – the scaffold and hoarding was erected within a few days.
Working closely with the structural engineers and church with funding being applied for via the War Memorials Trust the plan is to carefully remove the Corpus, then raise the cross from its current base and dismantle it into 2 pieces.
Once dismantled the timber will be dry stored to dry out to retain as much of the original elements as possible before essential repairs and possible replacement carvings are produced. Structural base repairs will be made and 2no x 1m Stainless rods will be housed within the main crucifix support, affixed to a stainless plate at the base and the crucifix reinstated / re-constructed in place with the corpus being refitted on completion.
